Tyson Kilmer has Success Training Dogs by Speaking the Same Language
Canadian born dog trainer Tyson Kilmer started training dogs when he was a youngster. Kilmer reflects on his training roots, “I was a dog trainer for twenty years before I decided to become a dog trainer. It’s what I’ve been doing since I was a little kid, this is my birthright.”
His modeling career started at the age of 15 after a scout discovered him. He modeled for designers Jean Paul Gaultier, Hugo Boss, and Dolce & Gabbana, besides being in a bevy of magazines such as Elle, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. But modeling wasn’t really in his blood and Kilmer decided to move to Los Angeles to follow his true passion, training dogs. He started Tyson Kilmer Dogs, Inc., first training family and friends’ dogs, and eventually through word of mouth landing such clients as Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Rob Lowe and Mike Tyson, among others.
Kilmer comments on his training technique, “I put together a comprehensive package on teaching people and animals how to live together in an urban environment. I think the common practice for most people is to get an animal, bring it home and teach it a couple commands and basically accept that as being dog training. In my world that barely scratches the surface. I look at my dogs as if they’re equally as intelligent as my human children. “
Tyson’s dog training books, Live With Dogs and The Dog Lover, Kilmer now has a wider audience for his “Tyson Method”. He explains, “My belief is that what you are feeling it what your dog is picking up on, so if you are feeling fear or self-doubt in your commands, then your animal is going to pick up on that and perceive it as weakness. I teach people to speak the language of the dog, by using hand signals in correlation with verbal commands and practicing due diligence, always ask the animal to do the same thing, the same way, every single time. Thus creating a language that is 100% effective.” Through his specialized dog training style, Kilmer is teaching his clients and their canines how to communicate with each other.
