“Everyone loves Max”, is not a suggested spin-off of hit television comedy, Everybody Loves Raymond. Rather, it is a fond declaration of Doris Roberts, the accomplished actress who plays Marie Barone, Raymond’s meddling TV mom, about her 108 pound, 11 year old Labrador-Great Dane mix. Recently, pet owners in New York City, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago were able to meet Max during Roberts’ awareness-raising tour on canine arthritis sponsored by Pfizer’s Rimadyl .
“A dog can’t say ‘ouch’ when it feels pain,” says Doris, and therefore pet owners “must be more aware.” Arthritis is a condition that Roberts and Max know well, as both suffer from it. “When getting up from playing with the grandchildren, it’s a race,” Doris laughs, ”sometimes Max can get up first, sometimes I can.” Doris implores pet owners to take their animals to the vet regularly, “so that if it is in any pain, it can be taken care of with medication immediately.”
The Everybody Loves Raymond star says she coddles her dog every bit as much as she coddles the show’s namesake. “I am his voice,” says Roberts. Raymond may cringe at such an assertion, but for Max-now equipped with an orthopedic bed and an elevated food dish, it’s a relief.
