Putting on the Dog: Digital Photographs and Canine Wisdom
Carol Doumani / Wave Publishing
Move over Wegman’s Weimaraners; make room for jaunty Jasper. Whether donning bifocals, running shoes, or a brunette wig, this wispy hound works the camera from every angle. Carol Doumani may not be a professional photographer, but her digital camera could have some believing otherwise. Or could it be the comely Saluki’s lanky, runway looks that lend these portraits their undeniably artistic edge? Whatever the trade secret, this collection of homespun snapshots exposes a fresh eye in the digital domain.
The book’s highlights lie in the unexpected paring down of props, such as in the simplicity of a photo entitled “Art Appreciation” or in the charming close-up of Jasper’s tootsy (for those of us with an inexplicable paw fetish). And the promised canine wisdom? Although several of the book’s notable quotes were penned by Jasper himself, Doumani does pull from other credible sources, including Woodrow Wilson, Milan Kundera, and even Eeyore.
While images of this pixelated pup are certainly endearing and the book’s overall look certainly attractive, it may be time to hurl a sandbag at the flooded market of overpriced canine photography gift books. Nothing personal, Jasper; just a thought…
