Saturday, September 19th is Puppy Mill Awareness Day! Puppy Mills are commercial breeding facility that focuses on increasing profit, and not on the treatment of the dogs. The animals are kept most of their lives in cramped cages with little to no care. People don’t realize that most of these puppies are sold to pet stores across the nation!
Puppy Mill Awareness Day was founded in 2003. The purpose of this holiday is to promote awareness and educate the public on the abusive conditions and practices that are established in these mills across the company. Only 26 states in the U.S have laws to regulate commercial kennels to prevent animal abuse – NOT ENOUGH!
Puppies that come from mills are found to contain certain health problems and even hold certain behavior problems. Some of these issues include: epilepsy, heart disease, eye problems, kennel cough, aggression and anxiety.
Although refusing to purchase a puppy from a pet store seems like the only way to stop these mills how are we sure that a change will be made? WELL – the public will stop buying puppies from pet stores over time. If they don’t sell quickly the storeowner will lower the price, which leaves with a smaller profit. This will lead to needing fewer dogs in the store making mills produce fewer dogs.
You can help stop puppy mills!
- Make a pledge! Pledge that you will never shop for a dog in a pet store.
- Promote awareness! Blog, tweet, post to face book! You don’t realize how a one post can go along way.
- Adopt a puppy mill survivor. These dogs especially need loving homes and one of these survivors may be the new addition to your family.
- Donate and Fundraise! Fundraising is constant! Contact your local shelter on how you can support!
