There are many reasons to go to stunning Greek island of Zakynthos. Also known as Zante, the island is suffused with the beautiful mild weather of the Mediterranean climate, giving you the chance to have a blissfully relaxing holiday among the sun, sea and white pebbled beaches.
Turquoise waters, lush countryside, and access to places like the Navagio beach – the famous landmark of the island, isolated by cliffs and accessible only by boat, it’s a beautiful, lonely cove that will make you feel like you’re in paradise. It’s also a favorite location for BASE jumpers to try out their death defying sport, and if you go in August you may see some leaping from great heights.
More down to earth, but just as exciting, is the Bay of Laganas. Here you’ll find the home of the Loggerhead Turtle. It’s one of the key breeding grounds for this endangered – and very cute – species, and the only other places you can find them are Italy and Turkey.
The beaches at Laganas are now protected, as the place where the baby turtles hatch out is also a popular place for tourists to sun themselves, making it rather dangerous for the turtles. Their season for mating is between April and June and at this time thousands of turtles return to the beach on which they were born to nest and lay their own eggs.
The tiny turtles hatch out about 60 days after the eggs were laid, which does happen to be the peak time for tourists, which means if you do go at this time you need to respect the area a much as possible. There are six different nesting beaches in Laganas, and the most important is called Sekania.
Sekania is quite small but is home to about 600 nests every year. It’s the only beach that hasn’t been somewhat destroyed by mass tourism in the area. Greece bought the land surrounding this beach in order to protect it , it’s known as ‘Turtle Paradise’ and is guarded every day during June to October to keep people at a safe distance.
If you do like the thought of visiting this stunning island, researching last minute holidays to Zante tends to always bring up the best deals. If you are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, then you can watch the turtles hatching out and making their way down to the sea.
It’s a magical and privileged experience to see these turtles and it could make your special holiday in Zante even more wonderful. And, of course, if you’re not lucky enough to see these beautiful creatures, you can still enjoy the many and varied delights Zante has to offer.
