Celebrating Independence Day is a happy and fun tradition, you want to make sure it stays that way when your pet is involved. There are many things that could cause a problem for your dog, during the celebrations. You need to think carefully about how to take care of your dog on this day of celebration, which is why we are providing you with some useful advice. Take a look at our tips on how to keep your Independence Day free from stress for you and your pooch.
1. Beware of the fireworks
Most people love fireworks; they make for a spectacular sight. But your pooch may not think they are so spectacular. According to behavior veterinarian Valerie Jonckheer-Sheehy MVB MRCVS MSc LAS; “…Development of a reactive, anxious, fearful or phobic response to the sound of fireworks is a very common behavioral problem in dogs.” There are certain signs to look out for that will let you know if your furry friend has a problem with the fireworks. They may pace a lot, or cower up next to you. They may salivate more than usual, shake or pant. Some dogs also become more vocal if the fireworks are bothering them.
To make things easier for your dog if there are 4th July fireworks nearby, keep them indoors and try to make your home as soundproof as possible. Give your pooch a place to go where they will feel comfortable, and the noise is limited. Most importantly, keep an eye on your pet and praise them when they are calm, it helps to keep them chilled. Don’t forget to make sure your dog is wearing ID, just in case they run from your home in panic.
2. Check the party invite
If you’ve been invited to a 4th July party make sure it’s okay for you to take your dog with you; don’t just turn up with poochie as a companion. If the invite doesn’t include pets you will have to make other arrangements for your dog, or give the party a miss. If your dog isn’t invited then the environment many not be suitable for pets and this could lead to a lot of stress for your dog if you just turn up anyway. If your canine companion is invited then check out the furniture etiquette. If your host doesn’t allow mutts on the couch then you have to make sure your dog keeps their paws firmly on the floor.
3. Give your dog their own picnic
4th July is a very popular time for picnics, but you should never let your furry friend eat your food, it’s not good for them. Put together a special pet picnic so your dog doesn’t feel left out of the celebrations.
4th July is a time for friends and family to get together, celebrate and have fun. Take a look at our advice and it should help make sure this happens, without any stress for you or your dog.
If you really want to make 4th July a day to remember, then make it the day you take a trip to your local shelter and adopt a mutt to welcome into your family.
