Easter is a time to spend with your whole family with both the two and four legged members! However, with all that extra chocolate and candy around there are some tips that every pet parent should know to keep their pets safe around this colorful holiday.
If Interested The Humane Society of New York has a Californian Mix Male Adult Siamese colored Bunny! Massai The Bunny’s Story…I am already neutered and house trained. Maasai is a quirky little bunny. He has an affinity for Kale and of coarse carrots. He loves his leafy greens. Maasai is just under a year old but he’s been through a lot already. When he arrived here, he had a pretty bad leg injury. We treated him with all that he needed and today, he hops around as if nothing happened. Just like most bunnies, he also likes to cause some mischief and we don’t recommend him running around unsupervised. Contact 212 752 4842 if interested!
Safety Tips For The Whole Pet Family This Easter!
1.) Keep chocolate away from your pets. Chocolate is very toxic to our four legged friends. They may love the taste as much as we do, but even a little can make a dog really sick. So when hiding that Easter basket be sure to place it somewhere where your furry family members can’t reach it. If they do manage to get into any chocolate be sure to take them to a vet right away.
2.) Don’t give your dog cooked or smoked ham bones. Cooking bones will make them brittle and easier to splinter and crack. Dogs can choke on the broken or splintered pieces. Raw bones are sturdier and harder to break so they are a better treat to give your dog. Of course, even with raw bones pets should be supervised while chewing to watch for hazards that may arise from constant chewing.
3.) Be careful to keep Easter grass away from your pets. It may look pretty and add the purrrfect touch to a filled Easter basket, but those thin pieces of plastic may look like the perfect treat to your pet. If ingested Easter grass can tangle up in your pet’s stomach and require surgery to remove. Or you may find a long, green surprise during your dog’s walks a few days later!
4.) Easter Lilies are toxic to pets. They may be beautiful, but Easter Lilies are very toxic to pets. If you have a cat who loves to sample any greenery you bring into your home, it would be best to keep Easter Lilies in a room the cat isn’t allowed into or a place your curious pet can’t reach. It will also keep your beautiful flowers looking their best!
5.) Eggs are a staple part of any Easter celebration! While it’s safe to include your pet in this tradition, make sure to peel all the eggs shells off a hard-boiled egg for your dog! After all, who wants a crunchy eggshell while trying to enjoy a yummy soft, hard boiled egg!? It’s also important to keep the dyes you use to color eggs away from your pets, as some brands can be toxic if ingested. Also don’t let your pet eat any eggs you might have missed from you hunt. Spoiled eggs will upset any stomach, even your dog’s seemingly iron clad one!
6.) Bunnies may not be the best pet for you. It can be hard to pass up that adorable baby bunny you may see in the window at your local pet shop. Like with adopting a dog or a cat; adopting a bunny is a big and life changing decision. Remember that this is a living creature you will need to care for, for the rest of it’s life. Not just a holiday decoration. Rabbits can actually be hard to care for and have very specific needs that differ from the typical pet. They’re a prey animal so are not going to want to play, but would rather run and hide. If you think a bunny would be a good addition to your house and have considered all that they require to live a happy life with you, consider rescuing a bunny! Sites like House Rabbit Society has lots of information on how to care and where to adopt a bunny in need of a good home!
With these tips your dog will make it through the Easter holiday safe and happy. A pet parent can include their pets in their Easter traditions! Fill a basket (without Easter grass) with some of your pet’s favorite treats! Or maybe that catnip filled mouse your cat has been eyeing lately!
