There’s no getting around dogs being one of the best creatures on the planet: boundless energy and loyalty, a love of playing, and an amazing sense of smell. That last factor is being put to use in Helsinki Airport as well as Dubai International, where the program originated and launched the previous summer. In a press release, Finavia, the program’s creator, stated that they are excited to see the program in action. They are quite proud of their canine approach and hope to see it spread to other countries, which looks like it might happen soon.
Four dogs are currently being used in Finland to sniff out any potential trouble from folks flying in. Passengers may be asked to partake on their journey and will need to provide a sweat sample if they agree; good thing dogs don’t mind sweat. We need all the help we can get
Once the sample is dropped in a cup for safety, the dogs have shown they can pick up the scent of COVID-19 as fast as ten seconds. How does this work? That’s one still in the proverbial chemist’s lab though they do theorize that dogs can smell it in on the breath of a human or in their sweat or urine. Again, good thing dogs don’t mind these smells too much. It is also thought that dog’s ability to bond with mankind makes them especially aware of any illnesses or pains a human might be experiencing, even if said human doesn’t know it yet.
The program is set to take off in other countries as well and we can only hope our furry friends continue to do an amazing job out there. The program is designed to help stem the infection rate of COVID-19 and, with the help of these dogs, we could see a major reduction in infections worldwide – one step closer to getting things back to normal and one more win for dogs!
