The phrase “knowledge begets responsibility” became reality for Michelle Neufeld when she learned of the harsh, inhumane treatment of animal high-killing shelters in the south of our country. Michelle could not just let these killing shelters continue to murder animals in cold blood, so she set her mind to build an animal shelter where the animal is treated with respect, loved, and given every chance and opportunity to live a happy life. They have saved over 100 animal lives and continues to search to save even more – Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue located in South Hampton, Long Island, New York.
You may think taking care of these animals is hard, unsatisfying dirty work, however; each animal has their own unique personality that makes taking care of them fun. Take Otis, for example, who Michelle describes as “the heart and soul” of the team. He is compared to the dedicated, optimistic Babe Ruth. Then there is Lulu, a gorgeous black lab/neufie mix, who is as mushy on the inside as melted butter (though you would never think so due to her rough and tough exterior). Then there is Breaker, who is described by one of the rescuers as, “completely gorgeous…huge…and like a big goof ball…Typical gorgeous man who doesn’t get just how gorgeous he is…I call him the Matthew McConaughey of the family.” Clearly, these characters make working with them fun and entertaining. To own one of these creatures would be like adopting a new, euphonious personality in your family!
The organization’s mission is to spread awareness on the importance of spaying and neutering, as well as find homes for all abandoned animals. Every animal is looked after, and none are left behind. There are so many animals in our country that face death and abuse daily, and the shelter desires nothing but to give these poor creatures a home and love. Gimme Animal Shelter looks to save animals from death row. They give special medical attention to the animals, and provide a sociable, loving atmosphere until the animals find a permanent home. Gimme Shelter is a non-profit certified 501c3 organization and all proceeds go directly to their animals. They need help though, for it takes a pretty penny to save just one animals life!
Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue is hosting their Fifth Annual Summer Benefit on the evening of July 23rd, and you’re invited!
