Valentine’s Day can be as much fun and cute for pets as it is for their parents, if dangerous food and flora are kept out paw’s reach!
Pet safe bouquets
Many pet parents are unaware that most kind of lilies are potentially fatal for our feline friends. If you intend to send a bouquet to a cat parent, make sure there are no lilies in it – same if you receive an arrangement, remove the dangerous flowers, for your cat’s safety! If you notice diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, take him to the vet immediately, because your pet might have ingested a poisonous flower or plant. A day or two of exposure can cause acute kidney failure. Even ingesting small amounts of pollen from a cat’s fur is considered poisonous. Thankfully, these plants don’t cause serious harm in dogs – only in cats. When ingested by dogs, they will result only in mild gastrointestinal upset. Not the kind of problems you want to deal with on Lover’s Day, or any other days!
Roses are red, the vet’s scrubs are blue
Be careful as well with your flowers arrangements that include roses. Thorns can be dangerous. Your dear pet can step on one, or swallow it by accident. Ingesting a thorn can cause a severe infection or even a puncture!
Keep them away from Xylitol
Xylitol is a commonly used and naturally occurring sugar substitute. It can be used alone or in combination with aspartame or other sweeteners. If ingested, gum, candy and other treats that include this sweetener can result in a sudden drop in blood sugar known as hypoglycemia. This can cause your pet to suffer depression, loss of coordination and seizures.
Chocolate and cocktails
As much as we love eating chocolate, and as much as they seem to like it too, chocolate is severely poisonous to your pets. Never let them have any treat or food that contains chocolate. Same goes with cocktails. Be careful not to spill them were your pets can get to them.
