After dog lovers read this, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, the 8-time winner of the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest on Coney Island, might have some interesting competition next year! And this new competitors have not one, but two legs up on him!
This just in: dogs CAN eat hotdogs.
Now, before you get all excited, take note that it should be IN MODERATION. Unfortunately, that means that they probably won’t be able to beat Joey’s record of 69 hotdogs last year, and 61 hotdogs this year.
However, that doesn’t mean they can’t participate in your family’s July 4th barbeque! While hot dogs aren’t particularly good for your pooch, they’re not terribly awful or toxic either. Your dog will love the tastey treat, but there are no real health benefits of your dog ‘going cannibal’. Hot dogs are high in sodium, which isn’t good for anyone, human or dog, in high doses. Additionally, steer clear of the bun and sauces. A lot of bread and sauces are just bad for your dog in general, especially since both are high in sugar.
So, if you do decide you want to enter your pup in the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest next year, make sure the dog (that’s being eaten) is cooked, breadless, and sauceless! Joey Chestnut better watch out – it really is a dog eat dog world out there.
