Personal Chef, Culinary Nutritionist, and Certified Personal Trainer Diane Henderiks lets us in on some doglicious advice, and even gives us her very own “Muttloaf” recipe! As if your dogs don’t beg enough–they’ll be beggin’ you for more after you introduce them to this tasty doggy dish!
What inspired you to be a chef?
My inspiration is the passion I have to teach people that delicious food does not have to be laden with salt, fat and sugar! Exercise and nutrition have been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was an all state field hockey player in high school and have been a personal trainer and group fitness instructor for over 20 years. As a Registered Dietitian, food and nourishment is my core. I grew up in an Italian/Irish household where both my mother AND father were active in the kitchen and they still are to this day! I have always loved to cook so after years of working in private practice I decided to self publish a cookbook to share my expertise of cooking healthful dishes that taste amazing. I now have a thriving catering and personal chef business on the Jersey Shore and could not be happier with the career path chosen.
What is your best dog recipe? What inspired this recipe?
My “muttloaf”! I make this for my dogs on their birthdays 🙂
Diane Henderiks’ “Muttloaf”

- 1/2 cup carrots, grated
- 1 cup cooked brown rice

- 2 tablespoons chicken broth
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup fresh whole-wheat bread crumbs (unseasoned, dried works fine as well)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.
3. On a rimmed baking sheet coated with olive oil, form mixture into the shape of a bone, about 8″ long and 1-2″ thick.
4. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until there is no pink in the center. Remove from oven, let cool and serve. Enjoy!
What dog inspired this recipe?
My first Great Dane, Teagah…she loved it!
Tell us about your dogs!
We have 2 dogs, Lilly and Daisy.
Lilly is a Weimeraner and my sidekick. A friend told me about her and we drove 3 hours to pick her up when she was 6 months old. Her family was moving to Florida from New Jersey and they could not take her with them. She was named already so we decided not to change her name. She is sweet, protective, active, loving and a joy. She is my companion for walks and really does not leave my side…ever!
Daisy is a Great Dane and a couch potato. We got her from a breeder. She is so kind, very lazy, amazing with kids but not a fan of other dogs. She is 175 pounds and very regal looking. Her favorite thing to do is sleep. Since we had a Lilly we decided to pick another flower name for the Great Dane and came up with Daisy.
If your dog was a celebrity chef who would he she be? Why?
Lilly – Ina Garten. She is a homebody, loves her family, easy personality, loves the outdoors and you just want to hang out with her.
Daisy – Julia Child. She has a commanding presence, unintentionally humorous, good natured, big personality with a clumsy grace.
