Every little girl dreams about the day when she walks down the aisle wearing a beautiful wedding gown. Petals was no exception. When Jimmy and Petals decided to wed, she was stunning in a pearl-studded Vera Wang inspired evening gown, while Jimmy donned a bow-tie around his neck. But unlike most brides this one won’t get to toss the bouquet, since Petals is an Italian Greyhound.
“Til Death Do Us Part,” is now a phrase not only used by humans but animals as well. Celebrity dogs like Petals, Sigourney Weaver’s dog, are not only having luxurious wedding ceremonies but they are also participating in their owner’s weddings.
Gavin Rossdale chose his Hungarian sheepdog, Winston to be his best man at his wedding to pop singing sensation Gwen Stefani. In 2003 when Adam Sandler and Jackie Titone wed, his English Bulldog, Meatball acted as the ring bearer dressed in a custom tuxedo and a white yarmulke. Rev. Kermit Rydell, owner of A Beach Wedding performs wedding service for pets in Oahu, Hawaii for $75. Rev. Rydell explains that animal weddings are an opportunity for two animals that favor one another to unite. The owners usually dress their pets in costumes and the ceremony is performed in a park. “It is like a party for the dogs and we have doggie cake afterwards,” Rev Rydell says.
Hollywood Hounds is a canine care center that offers various doggie services, including weddings, which are referred to as “Muttramony”. “Pet owners can even hire limos to carry the bride and groom to the wedding. The ceremony is performed by a minister in a gazebo. Owners can even arrange for their female dogs to have a “pawdicure” before the wedding, which is a manicure for dogs,” said Karen Pearson of Hollywood Hounds. A “Muttramony” ceremony costs $250 an hour and there is a two-hour minimum.
But dogs are not the only animals that get married. In July 2003 Xena and Blue, both Hyacinth Macaws–the largest parrot in the world, wed after Blue gave Xena a 600-carat cubic zirconium ring at Omar’s Exotic Birds in Hollywood. According to Kim Martin, who works at Omar’s Exotic Birds, the wedding took place outside of the store in a canopy-styled alter. The store was decorated and the birds even cut cake after the ceremony, “It was a cute idea but I never considerd marrying any of my animals,” Martin quips.
