Powerful women who care converged today in New York City to make a difference! The annual event supports UCP of NYC, an organization founded by Loreen Arbus, daughter of ABC founder Leonard H. Goldenson, in honor of her older sister, who suffered from Cerebral Palsy. UCP of NYC was created to honor role models representing various segments of the community. It is a celebration of women who have blazed new paths, broken glass ceilings and inspired others, by their individual examples, to achieve great things. Each year, they honor caregivers, philanthropists and business leaders at this memorable event that has become a New York tradition.
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development, chiefly in the various areas of body movement. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth up to about age three. Resulting limits in movement and posture cause activity limitation and are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, depth perception, and other sight-based perceptual problems, communication ability; impairments can also be found in cognition, and epilepsy is found in about one-third of cases. CP, no matter what the type, is often accompanied by secondary musculoskeletal problems that arise as a result of the underlying disorder.

- Dogs for example can be trained to open doors drawers and retrieve certain items like a remote control. Service dogs can be trained to assist cerebral palsy patients, performing tasks the owner has difficulty completing. Many individuals with CP rely on those dogs to help gain further independence with self-care, chores, mobility, health-related activities, and safety. Individually trained service dogs perform at least one supporting task that helps with functional independence. The type of supportive tasks provided by a service dog varies. Although service dogs are most often a mobility tool for people with cerebral palsy, they assist with a variety of health conditions and impairments, and often make a big difference in a person’s daily life. They can for example be trained to open doors drawers and retrieve certain items like a remote control.
