In many ways, A Novel Romance is your typical movie love story: two people are brought together, they swear they won’t fall in love, they do so anyway, and become a bonafide couple after a huge obstacle. It sounds like every Katherine Heigl and Julia Roberts movie ever made, but A Novel Romance introduces new twists that most movies of its kind haven’t explored, bringing a new light to this old story.
First of all, A Novel Romance isn’t a chick flick. Both men and woman can enjoy this film. It’s full of laughs, yet also rounded out nicely by weightier dramatic moments. Steve Guttenberg and Milena Govich star as Nate Shepherd and Jenny Sparks, two strangers who connect while waiting for their not-quite-better halves in a ritzy New York restaurant. Those lackluster partners are played by Shannon Elizabeth and Matthew Del Negro, and they serve as excellent reminders of what Nate and Jenny are missing throughout the movie.
The comedy in A Novel Romance is well done – with a Police Academy alum like Guttenberg, it’s no surprise – but when the scene calls for a serious moment the tone is seamlessly transitioned into drama. One of the funnier scenes involves a small cameo from Wendy Diamond (sans Lucky), letting out a memorable laugh after a highly dramatic dinner scene.
Although the basics of this story has been done before, the twists make this film is a breath of fresh air. And in this age of prequels, sequels, remakes and reboots, A Novel Romance stands out as an enjoyable alternative.
A Novel Romance also features Jeffrey Ross, Jay O. Sanders, Doug E. Doug, Kelly Bishop, Maddie Corman and Wass Stevens. It opens this Friday at Quad Cinema!
