Animal Fair respectfully awards the Humane Society of Louisiana the coveted 2008 Cesar® Five Dog Bone Award for the most dedicated and Pet-Friendliest Shelter! The Humane Society works tirelessly at saving animals and creating new programs to ensure animal safety. This shelter has been at the forefront of animal protection in Louisiana since 1988, and when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans leaving over 30,000 animals displaced, the big challenge for this organization has been to keep lifesaving programs for animals in operation.
Since Katrina, the Humane Society of Louisiana has been forced to operate from an emergency shelter in nearby Tylertown, Mississippi. Before the hurricane, they operated from a private animal shelter for abused and abandoned animals in New Orleans, minutes away from the Superdome. Katrina’s devastating high winds and rain totally destroyed their shelter, but they never give up and are vigorously trying to raise funds to rebuild a new needed shelter. We have had such an overwhelming response to HSL’s plight by our readers and animal supporters that Animal Fair has gotten behind this project. Wendy Diamond our founder has become a Chairperson for the Katrina Pet Memorial Fund.
Recently, the Humane Society of Louisiana has launched a new initiative in solving crimes involving animals called the Rapid Response Animal Abuse Team. After a beautiful mother dog had been shot to death in front of her four nursing puppies in Edgard, Louisiana, HSL was outraged and knew something had to be done to curb and eliminate violence towards animals. All of the puppies were rescued and when the news of this random act of violence was reported over the internet, more than one hundred viewers nationwide contacted HSL offering help.
“Because of the limited resources we continue to face in the aftermath of the 2005 storm season, we had to reevaluate many of our programs. We decided to use the internet to discuss and analyze the crimes, hoping to generate support and volunteers. As a team we will canvass the streets and alleys, looking for clues, and we hope to bring attention to crimes that would often be overlooked by local law enforcement agencies,” says Jeff Dorson, Founder and Executive Director of the Humane Society of Louisiana and the group’s only full time investigator.
Animal Fair and our readers would like to salute the Humane Society of Louisiana, a shelter that believes in soldiering on against the inhumane injustices taking place towards animals in the South. If readers want to join, participate, volunteer, or send necessary resources to help their new program Rapid Response Animal Abuse Team, please do so!
