Booming Week for the Fourth of July
Each year I find my head buzzing as Fourth of July sets off fireworks in my head leaving me pondering about different visions of red, white and blue. I always get a patriotic rush each year as our country turns another year older – just imagine how old it would be in dog years! 1624 years old! As a vegetarian I never think about the food but I do think about hot dogs – not the ones you eat but the ones who get to bask in the sun before the fireworks go off. That’s right keep those dogs out of the heat and away from loud noises –no one wants a howling soundtrack in response to the big ka-booms. So this year I kissed Lucky goodnight early and headed over to NBC’s Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks in Brooklyn where I watched the sky light up and got patriotic with American Idol runner-up Katherine McPhee and singing sensation Gavin DeGraw! Strangely enough Lucky was out of the loop yet I still found out all the hottest dog scoop to report and review when I got back home! At the show McPhee, who goes by “Kat” but assures me she loves dogs, met me while I was hanging with Duke, the fireworks sniffing bomb dog, and Duke’s handler, Detective Lanoce. Yes not all sleeping dogs can lie on Holidays and Duke was a hardworker on such an important day.
Fourth of July is always about music and crooner Gavin Degraw told me about his non-musical passion: walking his brother’s English Staffordshire, Eddy. DeGraw told me Eddy’s got a bit of a mix head when it comes to his identity. “He’s thinks he’s a Boxer,” DeGraw told me. He said the mental jumble often gets Eddy in trouble with other dogs when they go on long walks. Eddy just can’t help but pick the occasional barking match with four-legged passerby’s, sometimes starting matches that he couldn’t never compete in. Though Eddy does draw in some female attention for DeGraw (not from bitches, but kind female pedestrians).
Kat McPhee confided with the pet fairy herself about her Lab who recently passed away. Her family dog since she was twelve may be gone, but this sad moment hasn’t stopped McPhee from expanding her animal repertoire, telling me “I got Chihuahuas because I started traveling so much and I am an animal freak. I can take Nina and Larry [no – not her hair and make-up people… the name of her dogs] anywhere. I put them in a little bag and they’re like humans, there amazing.” McPhee and I got to talking about the upcoming premiere of Greatest American Dog and she was so excited she has already volunteered her dogs for a potential 2nd season, “Larry and Nina should be guests on Greatest American Dog because they’re like humans and they’re perfect. I love them.”
At the show, I also ran into footballer Tiki Barber who’s about as American as apple pie and Natalie Morales from NBC’s Today Show. Lucky missed out but I told her she will see them and be able to catch up on our Today Show segment on July 8th. Watch the segment http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25585807#25585807 . This 4th of July was the celebration that kept on giving. The show also included pre recorded tunes from Natasha Beningfield, Jordan Sparks, and Kenny Chesney performed!
Although a Holiday was nestled in this week, Lucky and I are busy getting ready for our annual Paws for Style and Thursday’s premiere of Greatest American Dog! This week Skeery Jones of Z100 did myself and the Humane Society of New York a HUGE favor by allowing Dr Rubenstein, Anne Marie Karesh, Lucky and myself on as co hosts and guests on New York City’s biggest and most listened to music station. The group and I helped spread the word of the tireless work of the Humane Society (I perspire just thinking about it – especially with the Manhattan summer humidity). As usual our annual Paws for Style fundraiser will benefit the HSUS of NY.
So mark your calendar for the 9th Paws for Style doggie fashion show benefiting the Humane Society July 15, 2008! This year join MTV’s The Hills fashion starlet Lauren Conrad and her newly rescued rescue mix, Chloe, jetting in from LA. Other distinguished dogs and canine walking celebrities strutting the Catwalk will be darling Hairspray‘s Nikki Blonsky’s dog Rocco clad in Tory Burch, Cornelia Guest’s dog Bear in Badgley Mischka, Law & Order‘s Richard Belzer’s gem Bebe sporting Von Dutch! Last but not least, Lucky Diamond will be sporting Hale Bob, of course while walking me! It’s sure to be an evening of glamour, barks, stars, celebrities with their celebridogs! Join us and don’t miss this guaranteed night to howl about! You can purchase tickets for Paws for Style by calling Anne-Marie Karash at the Humane Society at 212-752-4842 or by emailing puppylove@animalfair.com. But there is limited seating and tickets available (no tickets will be sold at the door) so book your tickets now! All dogs and their parents are welcome to attend! Woof-Woof! A little puppy also told me that the cameras for The Real Housewives of New York will be rolling.
And don’t forget to support Lucky this Thursday on Greatest American Dog on CBS – check your local listings!

The paws for style show sounds exciting!! its awesome that with your and lucky’s busy schedule you find the time to put time into such an amazing cause! the other day i was reading a article online about how people beat their dogs and put them in bags and burn them alive. ITS SICKENING!!! Its great that your giving them a voice!! They need people to stand up for them and protect them from jerks!

I couldn’t even figure out where my dog was hiding when the fireworks started going off, he was scared so badly. And I can’t believe you got to meet a hottie like Kat McPhee and Tiki Barber, only one of the greatest players in Giants franchise history!! That would have made my night the best of the year.
