While most people are usually familiar with Bethenny Frankel as a TV Reality star on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City, her natural calling is really that of a natural food chef. After graduating from The National Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York City, Frankel formed Bethenny Bakes, a company that combined her culinary talents with her zeal for health. It has a successful line of healthy baked goods and caters for private clients. And with a client list that includes the Hilton sisters, Alicia Silverstone, and Michael J. Fox, Frankel has certainly found success, which she shares with her mixed breed dog Cookie. Inquiring minds wonder: was her dog named as homage to her prosperous business?
“The name is totally coincidental!” Frankel clarified. “Before I ever baked a cookie, I named her Cookie because she was chocolate-chip cookie color, brown and dark spots. I thought she looked like a cookie.”
Speaking of tasty snacks, what advice does she offer for designing a healthy special treat for our dogs? “You have to keep it simple and plain. [For instance,] this is called Cookie’s Healthy Special. It’s plain chicken, brown rice and some peas. Chicken is simple, clean and plain. Rice is what we eat when we feel nauseated, so it’s good for dogs; it settles their stomach. If I was giving my dog vegetables, make it green, make it really well cooked, mushy so they enjoy it. It’s pretty simple, pretty straight-forward.”
Frankel’s ability to craft mouth-watering dishes is only matched by her encyclopedic knowledge on health and nutrition. When she’s not espousing the benefits of organic food, you can catch Frankel doling out health tips as the expert spokesperson for Diet.com and in her monthly column for Health Magazine.
If her culinary expertise and impressive client base are any indication, expect Frankel to be in high-demand for the foreseeable future. But considering her love for dogs, is there any chance that she’ll switch to canine catering?
“I thought about cooking biscuits for dogs. You want to do something where they can have it once a day, it can’t be too rich.” She continued, “You can do it with the same recipe I have for humans, because my cookies are wheat, egg, and dairy free. It’s just really simple. I would love to do that!” Dogs around the world, start salivating.
