Paige Hemmis & her Cat Mercury are More than Just “Tuff Chix”
Many words come to mind when Extreme Makeover Home Edition’s Paige Hemmis is mentioned: strong, tall, sexy, blonde … but animal whisperer? Yes indeed. The physically powerful, long legged beauty gracing construction sites all over the country is adept with hammers and monkeys alike, “I love just being around animals and they tend to take to me pretty well. We’ve had wild animals on set and they all seem to come to me.”
Best known for her signature pink tool belts, Hemmis is the proud owner of a Siamese and orange tabby mix rescue cat named Mercury, “I’ve liked naming my pets after Greek or Roman Gods. Mercury represents the God of speed and sending messages. She’s not really fast or sends messages so the name didn’t really work out,”Hemmis says. She is, how ever, potty trained, no small feat for a feline! “Training a cat to go on the toilet is not as hard as you might think. It took about twelve weeks, so it’s a commitment. It’s the best thing I ever did with her. And its funny because I’ll be standing in the bathroom and turn around and be like ‘oh excuse me, you’re using the bathroom.’”
Her furry companion enjoys joining her everywhere she goes with the Emmy winning Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Before her appearance on the show, she traveled much of the world but now loves the opportunity her job affords her to see cities and meet families throughout the United States, “I get to go there and live there for ten days and become part of the community and part of peoples’ lives and I just feel like I’m enriched for it.”
Hemmis shows us women can be tough while staying classy. Her new line “Tuff Chix” grew out of a need for cute, well fitting construction clothes and equipment for women, “Nothing fit me properly and I’d always get blisters.” In addition, her book A Chick’s Guide to Easy Home Improvement is now for sale, another essential for women who desire to try their hand in this man dominated field.
