Marc Bouwer Finds Creative Strength with his Two Terriers: Goliath & Delilah
Marc Bouwer, one of the world’s premier fashion designers, sees creating exquisite fashion and being humane as inseparably linked. While defining the cutting edge of couture, Bouwer puts ethics first, and now is a pioneer in cruelty-free fashion. “I used to use fur many, many years ago when I was a stupid young designer who was romanced by these big fur companies that would send me boxes of free fur, not realizing the process by which these things came to me in this box,” Bouwer recounts. He goes on to say, “Most people are unaware of the process – the hideous cruelty and unnecessary harshness and mistreatment of animals in general. Now with technology, there’s no reason for the slaughter of animals for anything – especially not for fashion.” While other designers clung to real fur as an essential statement of class and status, Bouwer paved the way for humane fashion design and gradually won the hearts of celebrities who recognized his plea for the ethical treatment of animals, “It’s guilt free fashion. Why would you want to wear a dead carcass on your back? Why would you want to wear formaldehyde? Does that make you look more fabulous? I think it makes you look more stupid and selfish.”
Marc Bouwer is the proud owner of two Yorkies, Goliath and Delilah. While he loves his designer pups with a passion, his next dogs will be rescued ones. He now realizes that “there is such a crisis with the dog and cat shelters with how many unwanted animals there are”. Presently, his two lovable office companions join him at work everyday where they have “a couch in the back that they sit on and a bed. They also walk around and sit in different peoples’ laps, sleep a lot of the time, or they just watch.” And there’s a lot to be seen.
Celebrities are drawn to the deceptively simple elegance of his gowns and are frequently found in Bouwer’s studio discussing their visions with him. His pieces have graced the covers of hundreds of magazines and his clientele ranges from Oprah Winfrey to Petra Nemcova to Angelina Jolie. He enjoys designing for individuals as well as the masses. The Marc Bouwer Couture collection is sold in specialty stores throughout the United States.
Marc Bouwer is a man with a mission, “I’m going to make a lot of money and I’m going to get a farm or an estate and I’m going to rescue animals.” If his sizzling career is any indication of his drive, we don’t doubt this project will soon become a reality.
