Andrea Bowen began acting at the age of six, playing Young Cosette, in the popular Broadway production, Les Miserables. She was the youngest Cosette in the show’s sixteen year run! Bowen admits, “That show got me really hooked into acting and performing. I just loved it!” This talented actress went on to star in the original Broadway casts of The Sound of Music as Marta Von Trapp and Jane Eyre as Adele. Industry execs were definitely taking notice, and Bowen secured guest spots on TV’s Law & Order and Third Watch, along with the features New York Crossing and Highball.
This sweet Columbus, Ohio native is currently working on one of TV’s most popular shows–ABC’s Desperate Housewives! Bowen plays Julie Mayer, daughter of “desperate housewife” Susan Mayer–played by Teri Hatcher. “I have such a blast doing the show. I love playing the role of Julie–she is so intelligent, sarcastic, funny and smart. She always has great lines. I thank the writers for that and for giving me story lines that aren’t just one-dimensional. I love working with Teri, she is just great! She’s extremely professional and smart and always in character. We really have great chemistry on screen and off,” Bowen gushes. She even snagged a SAG Actor award for “Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series”. Prior to her Desperate Housewives success, Bowen was cast in roles on ABC’s primetime series That Was Then, FOX’s Boston Public, One Tree Hill and Nip/Tuck.
In addition to acting, this twelve-year-old is an accomplished singer and dancer. Bowen can be heard on the Original Cast Albums of Jane Eyre, The Musical, The Sound of Music, ’98 Broadway Revival, Night of The Hunter, Z the Masked Musical, Broadway Kids Sing America and the Sugar Beats discs Car Tunes. “I love being active. I take singing lessons and I love swimming, horseback riding, just hanging out with my friends and going to the movies.” Bowen says.
Currently, Bowen lives in LA with her parents and her adorable pooches. “My family has two dogs, Maxie and Oscar–but Maxie is my dog. They’re both Yorkshire Terriers. Oscar is five-years-old and Maxie is six months! Maxie is so funny! She has the best personality. She is loving and cuddly but also spunky and vivacious and full of attitude. I love them both so, so much! They are great pets. I don’t even think of them as dogs anymore. I know them so well, they’re more like family members. They mean so much to me.”
Andrea Bowen has big plans for her favorite canine friend: “I’ve only brought Maxie on set with me one time. I had her for three days and she was so little, but I think she loved it. Next year, I have to get a puppy pass for her so she can come on set more often, because I love spending every moment with her!”
