Adventurers go on safari to see big game. Sophie is an adventurer in a Safari—a Monaco Safari Zanzibar. For this freewheeling feline, the big game involves great friends and great food. How did an American Short Hair from Jefferson, Louisiana become the number one party animal on the open road? She adopted Joe Cahn.
Nine years ago Joe Cahn, the self-appointed Commissioner of Tailgating, sold his home and his business. He bought a luxury motor home and took to the open road. “After years of flying across the country cooking and consulting, I wanted to see America from the highways,” said Cahn. The lure of the road was strong, but there was more behind his decision. Meeting his fellow tailgaters was a major impetus. “Tailgating” involves people coming together before an event, in the parking lot of an arena or stadium, to cook, eat and socialize. Cahn goes to every stadium he can to meet and eat with everyone around him. It offered him an opportunity for relationship building. “When you are in the parking lot, a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.”
That is one of the reasons Cahn has Sophie at his side. “Having a cat reminds you that relationships take work,” said Cahn. Sophie and Cahn are the best of friends. She is the third cat that has been Cahn’s navigator, and this is her third season. For the first hundred miles of each day’s driving, she can be found asleep in her dad’s lap. Sophie loves to be the center of attention and will often cry to be petted. She loves to play fetch with her toy mouse. Sophie gives one hundred percent to her job as navigator. She absorbs the directions to their next destination by laying on them. Cahn can tell which direction they are traveling based on her position in the seat and the way the sun cascades over her.
Her role doesn’t end with finding the Sun. When Cahn navigates through the great American neighborhood of tailgaters, Sophie is on her leash at his side. Deep in their element, they meet and eat with friends old and new all across the country. Over the last nine years, Cahn along with his trusty navigators have traveled over 250,000 miles in four mobile luxury suites. He and his faithful companions have visited all of the NFL stadiums, seventy-three college stadiums and nine NASCAR race tracks. During the 2004 season, Cahn and Sophie have visited fifty professional and college football games. Their destination is Everywhere, USA.
