Dear Lucky – Is My Coat Color A Problem?

DearLucky

Lucky,

I’ve got a serious problem.  You see, I’m a Beagle, and my kid, who we’ll call Steve (don’t want him to know I’m writing you, you know?) is obviously disappointed in me. Let me start from the beginning.

Steve got me as a Christmas present last year, and apparently, from what I can gather from the conversations I overhear, he’s been wanting a ‘Snoopy’ dog, and his parents, figuring a Beagle was the only way to go, adopted me from the shelter.  And now, Steve, seeing that I’m orange, black and white and in no way look like his ideal dog.  He seems disappointed in me.  My question is, how can I impress him enough to make him like me? I want him to give me a chance despite my looks.

Beagle Ben

Ben,

That’s a tough one.  Well, first of all, unless you’re sure that he’s disappointed in you, don’t completely get down. Kids have a tendency to have a strange relationship with their pets. They meet and then love them to no end, then withdraw a bit when they learn the relationship takes effort from both sides. As time grows, though, they begin to cherish their time with the pet.  So don’t think you’ve been dumped quite yet just because the Honeymoon is over.

What I would do is just try to play with Steve.  Be the dog all kids love, try to stay clean, and be playful with him. Trust me, I’ve seen it done before.  You’ll melt his heart.
