It was a little more than a year ago when Philipp Plein decided to design a dog bed. His three pooches needed a place to sleep and his tastefully decorated home required a sleek design that would compliment his décor. Today, Plein has five beds in his Nuremberg home to provide comfortable seating for his canine cohorts in every room of the house.
What began as a personal quest for canine style led to a line of sophisticated home designs and accessories that has become 18 months later, a fast growing business. Plein has assembled a beautiful assortment of sleek and elegant home products that pets and humans alike have come to adore.
It all began with his dogs. “I really love my dogs,” says Plein. There is Sophia, a mixed breed he found at a local kennel, her son, Giacomo, (one of a litter of eight) and Billie, a 17 year old Yorkshire Terrier he grew up with in his parents’ home. The three dogs enjoy the luxury of Plein’s designs and were the catalyst for his ensuing success.
“My friends came over and loved the beds,” says Plein, “so I started making them for everyone.” Each bed is hand crafted with a stainless steel frame and can be ordered in any size to accommodate your pup or larger dog. The cushions are covered in imitation leather, cotton, or fake fur, and are easily cleaned and durable. “They last forever,” says Plein.
For this designer who describes himself as a businessman, it is important that his dog beds be seen as pieces of furniture, equal to those people use for themselves. “We sell in high quality furniture stores,” says Plein of the beds. “Creating one of our dog beds takes the same amount of work as doing a couch for humans.”
Today, Plein’s collection includes couches, day beds, tables, chairs, pillows, ottomans, dog collars and dog leashes in addition to his dog bed line. He describes his work as contemporary and modern with clean lines and is dedicated to delivering high quality workmanship to both two-legged and four-legged clients.
To date, Plein’s dog beds have been his best sellers. The designer is confident his other work (only in the marketplace for twelve months) will gain ground but remains convinced that the beds will continue to be strong sellers. People are always looking for ways to incorporate their animals in their lives with style, according to Plein, and his sales all over the world are proving him right.
