The Humane Society of Louisiana, a shelter for many homeless animals, was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, one of the United States’ most notorious and damaging hurricanes. Thankfully, the staffers at the animal shelter were able to successfully relocate their 158 animals safely before the storm, but lost their location in the aftermath of the damaging act of nature. Tens of millions of dollars were raised to help get the shelter up and running again, but the shelter never received the promised or appropriate rebuilding funds to resurrect the facility. Woof – woof, go figure!
In 2008, on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the unveiling of the Katrina Pet Memorial by the Humane Society of Louisiana, Animal Fair Media’s Wendy Diamond, the Chairperson for the memorial, and her beloved Maltese Lucky (RIP Lucky) the Chairdog, were honored with the Humane Society of Louisiana’s International Animal Ambassador Award, for their dedication and tireless work with rescue and shelter animals.
During her acceptance speech Wendy paid homage to Top Dog Executive Director of the Humane Society Of Louisiana Jeff Dorson for his unyielding dedication and strength, as well as the residents of New Orleans. She sincerely commented , “I’d rather help the people that really need help, and help the animals that really need help … and Jeff and the Humane Society of Louisiana here in New Orleans represent real Puppy Love. What they have done, and the devotion for the city of New Orleans, the unconditional love, the bond with this city and the loyalty with this city, who stayed through Katrina, and who are going to stay here through Gustav.”
Now, after 10 years the Humane Society of Louisiana has high hopes that the shelter will finally rebuild and relocate back to the city of New Orleans, the place they call home. Reason why? Local New Orleans renowned artist, Michele Lambert, is generously donating prints of her Hurricane Katrina artistic vision titled, I Cry for My City Today. Donations will support the Humane Society of Louisiana’s N.O. Place Like Home Campaign.

The Humane Society of Louisiana has ignited a new campaign titled N.O. Place Like Home. This campaign is specifically designed to generate massive support with building the new shelter up and giving even more homeless animals a temporary haven while in transition.
