Summer Pet Friendly Travel : Port Townsend- Washington, a Victorian Vacation
Wendy and Lucky know better than anyone just how hectic life can be, and sometimes you just want to find a small plot of peace and quiet and get away from it all! Unfortunately for many pet parents, this often means having to contend with the added stress of figuring out how to keep your pooch in pet perfect shape, both mentally and physically, while you’re away. And while many of us would love to take the dog along on our next family vacation, the fact of the matter is that having a canine companion often precludes some of the more luxurious, adventurous, and escapist aspects of a vacation. That’s why Wendy and Lucky continue to scour the globe for the places that understand and integrate puppy love into your vacation experience, and this time they’ve found a real gem in Port Townsend Washington!
Port Townsend is a small, pacific coastal town with a serviceable safe harbor and a healthy dose of crisp, northern air. If you’re looking to cool off this summer, Port Townsend won’t disappoint! Reaching its economic climax in the Victorian era, Port Townsend settled, for a time, into a sleepy existence under the historic shadow of the decommissioned Fort Worden, until finding a new, artistic life in the 1970’s. With an insurgence of artists and retirees being drawn to the untouched Victorian elegance of the town that was, Port Townsend Washington became a community of the arts, the antique, and of historic preservation. Calling tourists with its picturesque landscape and Victorian architecture, and annual music festivals, Port Townsend has become a destination for tourists of all species!
With an emphasis on the arts and the outdoors it should be no surprise that the people of Port Townsend are incredibly open to pets. Very few spaces are human-exclusive, and many not only allow, but encourage visitors to share their experiences with their pet! After their recent trip to Port Townsend, Wendy and Lucky have collaborated on a list of their absolute favorite attractions and activities.
While this first activity may err towards the human-friendly end of the spectrum, Wendy couldn’t resist sharing the incredible journey she took on the Puget Sound Express’ Whale Watching Tour! The Express guarantees that you will encounter the majestic Orca Whale on this once in a lifetime voyage. And if you don’t spot Shamu on this 4-hour tour, The Puget Sound Express will immediately book you on their next out-bound ship until you have the whale watching experience you paid for! Offering shorter tours featuring aquatic fauna such as colorful puffins and magnificent grey whales, The Puget Sound Express has the perfect high seas experience for animal lovers of any feather.
Grab a Treat
Wendy and Lucky knew that they were in love with Port Townsend when they discovered that the most delicious gourmet bistro in town had a pet-friendly patio! Sweet Laurette’s offers two heaping spoonfuls of ambiance, flavor, with a menu that will leave you drooling, a personality that will make you smile, and a pet-friendly policy that will have your tail wagging. From a grown up grilled cheese featuring cheddar, fontina, and basil on artisan bread, to the lemon ricotta pancakes, Sweet Laurette’s delivers a taste sensation that would be right at home in the big city, with a heart that anchors it to the moody Northwest.
While the view of the vast night sky with pinpricks of light piercing through the void is certainly spectacular, knowing Wendy and Lucky, they had a different sort of star-gazing in mind on their trip to Port Townsend. As an avid fan of young-adult fiction –despite her age- Lucky was especially excited for her trip to Port Townsend as it is the home of the rampantly popular author of the aggressively infectious “Twilight” franchise, Stephenie Meyer! And if those hunky were-wolves aren’t enough to convince you that “Twilight” is really about the pet lifestyle at it’s core, than you need to have a talk with Lucky Diamond! Stephenie can be seem around town, enjoying the atmosphere that so clearly inspired her defining works and is said to be friendly, warm, and enthusiastic, and forthcoming with all who are Lucky enough to grab a moment of her attention. Wendy and Lucky didn’t quite catch her on this trip, but that won’t stop Lucky from yapping all about the thrill of the hunt!
